Fauré Requiem
The Fauré Requiem is a French masterpiece of the choral-orchestral literature. Dispensing with much of the threat of retribution present in the traditional requiem text, Fauré's work is a compassionate, human-centered setting depicting the struggles of those who are mortal and the promise of salvation and redemption. The exquisite and justly famous Pie Jesus is one of the most performed soprano solos in the repertoire, and the final In Paradisum soars to the heavens to close this deeply stirring work.
Soloists for the Requiem will be Kiera Duffy (soprano), who recently made her New York Philharmonic debut in Pierre Boulez's Pli selon pli:Improvisation II sur Mallarmé, and Douglas Millar (baritone), a resident member of the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto.
To accompany the Fauré, the MCE will perform four stirring works by Johannes Brahms for women's choir, harp and two French horns, and a new piece by the MCE's director, Thomas Cunningham, receiving its world premiere. Mr. Cunningham's work is a setting of Walt Whitman's exuberant "One Hour to Madness and Joy" for choir and strings, written expressly for this performance.
